If you would have asked that question a few years ago, people would have said we don't need research. Where would we be today? And that I think will be the same in several years. We have to find the right balance between basic research and applied research, or like it was called at ESOF 2012, between curiosity-driven and challenge-driven. We need both of them. This is a virtuous circle: basic science drives innovation, drives applied science, drives innovation, drives application and drives basic science again. And if you cut this circle, you are loosing. That's the only way for us to have a good life in the future: invest in science. Science for society, that's important.
