I wrote this piece for a school band seated in Asker, a community with its name derived from the word “ash”. The tree is also known in Norse mythology as Yggdrasil. The piece is based on two types of musical material, the blues scale, and some motives that are quite different to blues, f.ex. a lydian-souding motive (b. 29). When I force the two types of material together, the musical alchemy is carried throughout on rhythms that add energy to the process. In this regard, the great composer Oscar Borg deserves an extra attention. The Norwegian "March King" Oscar Borg was chief conductor at the 1st Brigade Military Band in Halden from 1881 to 1918. Brit is a former hornist with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and works today with the professional Navy Band in Bergen. This solo piece is inspired by traditional, Norwegian folk music. The slurs of the music it intended to make character to the “Halling” (A traditional Norwegian dance).
