The BEACON project faces a major challenge for Europe and the world: developing innovative technologies to meet the growing demand for energy and resources. The project focuses on bio-refining: a process using non-food crops to create biomass which can be used in products instead of crude oil. In March 2014 the BEACON project won the category “Sustainable Growth: Green growth and jobs through Bioeconomy” at the RegioStars 2014 awards ceremony. The initiative from West Wales and the Valleys (UK) was recognised as one of Europe's most promising and innovative EU-funded regional projects.
